Snow Day product reviews

Every child loves a snow day - no school and snowball fights galore! But Sam has to wait for Granddad, even though all the other kids have already gone to the park... and all the dogs... and all the zoo animals! Only when the two finally arrive does Granddad see why Sam was in such a hurry - and they have the best time playing with everyone in the snow.

My 3 year old was very keen to explore this book when it came home. It is a beautiful hardcover book. The lettering of the title is embossed which was nice to run her fingers in and around. We talked about the letters and which ones were in her name as well. She was intrigued by the penguin on the cover, but also a little confused once the story progressed as there seemed to not have a lot of penguins in it.

However, she is very familiar with the concept of wanting to go out somewhere and having to wait for EVERYONE to get ready. She is always the kid at the door, with her boots on and bag ready to go in the car, right now! She put her hands on her hips and shook her head at the grand-dad in the book. But I could see she was just being a cheeky monkey about it.

Later into the book, the animals start to become a feature, including the penguin. She loved this, and happily pointed out each of the animals and said what they were. The book was fun, but a nice short story for those "whoops, we are running late for bedtime" moments. She was nicely satisfied with the story and went to bed very happily. She asked for the book a few more times during the week.

For Miss 8, one day she forgot to bring her homework reader home in the week. This is something that gets makeshift homework to replace it. So, without giving her a chance to see the book or protest, I handed her Snow Day to read. She was a bit nervous at first, because she doesn't read for leisure yet. She was also thrown by the penguin on the cover and doubted the point of the bird.

As she read through, she tripped on one or two words, but otherwise read the story very well. She enjoyed the story, and was able to stop and laugh at the scenes as they unfolded later on. I was pleased to see her succeed at reading this, because I knew it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Success in reading is the best motivator for getting her to read. And it's fair to say that anything that breaks down her doubts in her reading ability is going to be embraced in our house. A good book, that spans age groups preschool to primary easily.

My Miss Four and Miss Seven both went straight for this book. The cover with snow and a penguin immediately caught their interest. I liked that it looked like a good quality hardback with lovely illustrations. The front page has a textured indent on ''snow day" so its like the words have been written in the snow. The print is slightly out of sync with the indent as are the penguins foot prints but this is only slight.

Right from the cover this book does feel good quality and the pages are heavy and solid and this book is standing up to a lot of reading. I love the illustrations as do my girls. They are colourful and very beautifully done with great expression. The pictures tell the story all on their own and really need few words to accompany them. For this reason there aren't a lot of words which means that my Miss Seven can read this to my Miss Four and they both adore this book. The story line is perfect and both my girls spent a lot of time trying to convince me that the penguin is on every page (its not) but clearly they felt that the penguin should feature highly and that the penguin was a pretty key part of the story for them. We have read this book at least once every night and usually my Miss Four will read it to herself during the day. I love that the story is so well told in illustration's and books like this are just brilliant for pre beginner readers to keep them interested in the concept of stories. This is also a great story linking in with grandfathers and grandsons. Its nice to have a book that captures the bond that grand dads have with their grand children. I also love how very typical this story is with granddad having to do all his "things" to start the day. This did make me chuckle.

I really love this book and so do my girls. I can definitely recommend purchasing this and it is a great book for winter especially if you live down south and have so much snow around at the moment so get to have real snow days.
