I really like that the story is short and easy to follow. This mega mutant had the power with lava so their super power was obviously along the lines of heat and steam and super hot rocks so I can see that the boys will be interrupting the reading to keep acting out the battles but being boys I can see some tears over accidental kicking and hitting from the "battles".

Another good thing is that each book deals with one battle and then is finished so it wouldn't take too long to reach the end of the book (it is always a good thing when you have to keep boys engaged in the book that they can see it is short but powerful) and they can copy what they have just read about or heard from mum reading to them.

The book doesn't go into much detail about what lava is but it did have a moral to the story and that is usually a good thing as kids in general learn more from pretend characters in books and movies than they do from parents just talking to them and trying to explain things to them, I guess books are much cooler than adults.

I'm going to be using these books over the coming holidays to keep the kids out of trouble. Lucky I enjoy reading.

This is the 13th book in the Boy vs Beast series but the first book about mega-mutants. It's also the first Boy vs Beast book that we've ever read and my son loved it! I mean what boy doesn't love monsters, gadgets and epic battles?! The story is about a young Border Captain called Kai Masters and his battle partner BC whose job it is to protect Earth from the beasts that live in Beastium. They create a team to take on the latest mutant on the loose - the lava mega-mutant.

The book starts with a prologue that explains the history of the world and the creation of the Border Guards whose job it is to defend the border wall. The concept of the book sounds like a game - the Border Guards work their way up the ranks by battling and learning about the beasts. By doing so they earn new battle gear and upgrades.

The book was fast paced, action packed and exciting - my son was mesmerised from beginning to end. The print is fairly large and my son (age 6.5 years) had no problems reading it independently. There are a few black and white illustrations throughout the book and a really cool comic style section which depicts part of the battle. It's a fairly short book (60 pages) and can be read all in one go or over a couple of nights like we did.

I can see us reading this book over and over again and my son has already asked for more Boy vs Beast books for his birthday - definitely a win.
