The Prince and the Potty had great appeal to the children I read it to ranging from 18 months to 6 years. The littlies were curious about toilet training and the older ones got more of the humour and recall all the recent hype with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's visit around our country. Although it doesn't specifically say the Prince is Prince George it is easy to make the assumption given that Queen Elizabeth is mentioned and his parents are referred to as the Duke and Duchess. I would be curious to know if anyone will read this book to Prince George.
When I was first given this book to review I was impressed at the thick pages and thought it would with stand lots of reading from my toddlers. Unfortunately one of my darlings put the book in a puddle and when I discovered it the binding had broken. After the book had dried out the pages were warped and I had to tape several pages back in.
This book has a long version or a short version. The longer version, reading all the diagrams, was reserved for the older children when there was time. All the children enjoyed the shorter version and didn't complain that I had left out the extra bits. The different types of potty made us laugh. There was an eco-friendly potty which decomposed too quickly, a carriage potty pulled by a corgi, one that sang the national anthem and a royal robo-potty. The robo-potty was the favourite with the kids which laughed at all the crazy things it could do.
I found this a great book to talk to the toddlers about toilet training in a fun way especially when I did the sound effects and sang some of the British national anthem. I'm not sure if they were laughing because of the book or because I was being silly. I currently have three toddlers I care for whose mothers have said they want to start toilet training in the next few months so this has been a great introduction to them. For the older children it was a reminder that using the toilet is something we all have to do even princes and princesses.
