When a Dad Says "I Love You" product reviews

Dads know how to do everything. They can help with homework and carry you on their shoulders. They can make pancakes and teach you how to sing songs. These loving actions are just some of the ways dads show how much they care - and no matter how they say it, 'I love you' is wonderful to hear!

We recently received the book 'When a dad says I love you' to review. We have been writing book reviews on and off for KIWIreviews for almost four years now. Generally when I put a request in for review stock, I do so based on things (or books) my children have previously mentioned or asked me to buy them from their schools book club.. I requested when a dad says I love you because it sounded like a cute story to own, plus the cover had bears, my daughter and I love bears lol but other than that I knew nothing about the book.

When my parcel arrived I quickly flicked through the book but I did not read it though. I like to wait for my daughter and read new books together, especially ones we have never read before. When I flicked through the book I loved the cute and simple illustrations and could not wait for miss 7 to get home so we could get reading. Seems miss 7 could not wait to get home either, because as the parcel was in the car when I collected her from school, she promptly read the book to me on our drive home :)

I love 'When a dad says I love you'. Truer words in a children's book could not be spoken. Many children, especially young, will most likely miss the message the book has, but when they get older they will understand what it is the book is saying and how true it is for many dads out there. As my daughter read I found myself smiling and nodding in agreement and delighted at her reading away and then blurting out oh dad does that (carry her on his shoulders so she can see, or carry her to bed when her eyes are closed and her legs do not work.

When a dad says I love you is a gorgeous book that not only would make a lovely gift but would also be a beautiful addition to any bookshelf. Definitely one of my favourite books received from KIWIreviews to date :)

I found this book so emotional. My dad was not the sort of guy to express his feelings and instead would only ever say 'I love you' if mum was forcing him too. Mum on the other hand was always telling us how she felt and then she would always add 'ya know your dad loves you too'.

The meaning of the book was kinda lost on my two girls as my husband is always telling them how he feels. At the conclusion of the book I asked my daughters aged 5 and 2 did they know that their daddy loves them so much - which they both replied 'we know'. I asked them how they knew and they said because he tells us ALL the time. I then explained that not all daddys say those magical words of 'I love you' and asked them how else they knew he loved them based on the book we just read - 'he gives us lots of cuddles and kisses and he plays lego with us' bless them they are so innocent.

This book was great because not all dads know how to tell their children how they really feel so just by doing little things like play with their children or singing the same song over and over again lets the kids know how special they really are without actually saying 'I love you". My only complaint about the book would be the pictures - they are those floating ones and I would of preferred something sharper and more eye popping - I didn't find the pictures did the story justice. I think this book is absolutely beautiful and would recommend to everyone.

I thought it appropriate that my husband read this book to our 4 year old son and I got to be the observer as father and son shared some special time together. As soon as my husband read the title of the book, our son responded with "I love you Daddy". This book inspired love and the language of love between a father and child before it is even opened to the first page! It shows both the child and dad that there are many ways of showing love to a child through actions rather than necessarily using the words "I love you".

The illustrations are cute and show the relationship between many different animals and their children. Children relate so beautifully to animals and their soft toys and that makes the animals a perfect way to get the lovely messages across to children and their dads. The colours in the book are soft and relaxing and add to the lovely nature of the book.

Children can relate to many of the ways that love is shown in the book and it also helps dads see how important time with their children is. It is all about time rather than things that have been bought for a child. The message is just lovely and a timely reminder to all of us (mums as well as dads) that every moment we spend with our children builds the feeling of love that they experience.

There is a page showing some of the silly names that dads might have for their child and this made our son laugh. In fact, our son was either smiling or grinning for most of the book. There is mention of a 'bear hug' and our son asked his daddy "how do you do a bear hug?" and they both practised bear hugs. The interaction between both of them was just lovely. I would highly recommend this book to help foster the very special bond between a dad and his child or children. It allows them to talk about love and show love through the power of books.

As my husband finished reading the book, our son helped complete the last line of the book "I love you" He had really been listening to the story and was able to predict what that line would be. He then looked at his dad and said "it was the best story, it was all good!". From the voice of a four year old! I would have to take that as it was definitely worth a read.

We were so happy to receive this book. We have a few Dad themed books and my son loves them as he is a bit of a daddy's boy. Dad is out at work during the day and some weekends too which our son finds hard when Dad has to leave. The tears are soon forgotten but he likes to listen to the Dad stories throughout the day and will bring me the books to read to him.

We are a huge "I love you" family and we do say it to our children several times a day but of course there are non verbal ways of letting your children know you love them through your everyday actions. This book does just that, giving an example of an everyday thing a Dad might do with their child which is their way of saying and showing "I love you". The examples are real sweet basic things that any Dad could do like making pancakes, looking at ouchies, and checking out their son's muscles.

Each page has a different dad and child, on some pages it is a girl child and others a boy so easily a book for both sexes. The illustrations are very sweet animal Dad and Child duo's which are beautifully drawn and coloured in almost a watercolor effect. I thought it was a nice touch having it done with animal pictures instead of pictures of human adults and children and my son loves looking at the animals and trying to say their names.

I like how at the beginning of the book it says some dad's don't say I love you in the plain old ordinary way as it gives children a bit of a precursor to listen to the ways a Dad can say I love you differently. Of course at the end the Dad can just surprise you and say it in the plain old ordinary way which I think is a great sweet ending to the story. It makes it very special when Dad reads it to their child because they can then say their I love you's before bed and it will be something the child will remember as they go to sleep.

My son is only 19 months, his sister is 11 and when she read him this story, she started talking to him about things in particular their Dad does that mean that he loves them, like taking them to the park to feed the ducks, and letting them sit on his knee on the ride on mower. I think this would be a great book for a childcare centre or new entrants classroom to encourage discussion on Dads, especially for children who may have Dads that don't wear their emotions on their sleeve.

I am always on the lookout for cute and meaningful Father's Day presents - and this one is no exception. It is a completely charming book that I love reading over and over with my children, talking about their Daddy. Their Daddy loves reading it to them too - and loves the "You do that" they exclaim, and that our 22 month old cuddles in and says "I luff ouuuuuuuu" - so heart warming.

It a lovely book for people other than parents to read to a child too. It shows how love is not just the words - it through actions too, and that there are so many different ways to show love. The illustrations are so nice - and not too cartoony - always a plus. We really enjoy this book, and it has gone on our "Special Bookshelf" to read at bedtimes.

As soon as I saw this book I thought it was perfect for Fathers Day and it is. The illustrations are all dad and their sons and daughters but all as different "humanised" animals. The illustrations are just perfect with the story, which on each page has a different example of how dads say "I love you". It is just perfect and I really love this book. My little misses haven't taken to it as readily as other books but they enjoy cuddling up on the couch and listening to me read this and looking at all the pictures. I loved it when Miss Five pointed to the pancake picture and said "but mum you never burn the pancakes"... (I have!).

With Fathers Day coming up this is the perfect gift for dad to read with the kids and I think it is a great book to use as a base for helping children to understand that love is expressed in so many different ways and its not just about what you say but what you do that matters.

A perfect ten from this house hold and a great book to have for daddy time.

When a Dad Says "I love you" is a delightful book to read with young children. I read it to my two girls and they both enjoyed it and told me some of the ways I show them that I love them. The following night my three year old asked daddy to read it to her. As he read it I was brought to tears as I could hear the love that he had for his girls and they obviously understood that too as they snuggled up close and told him they loved him.

This would be a great story to read to you child when their dad is away especially if you could record dad reading it. I wish I had this when my husband was in hospital last year as this would have really helped them to feel that daddy hadn't forgotten about them. It is also great for families where dad doesn't say those three magic words very often, if at all.

There are several different animal families depicted throughout the book but in each case it is just dad and one child. This makes it relevant to children that don't have a mum, or mum and dad are separated, as well as those that have two parents living with them. This book is an important reminder to us all that love is shown in so many different ways and words are just one.
