Having read one Susie Day book already I was a little hesitant to read this one. Not because Day is a bad writer, but because she is so good that with the last one I really got too emotionally involved. This lead to many many hours of sleep lost as I tried to deal with the ending of the book. However, yesterday this book was calling to me, inviting me to an escape with new characters and fun. So I opened the book and got stuck in.

The first thing I noticed was how different the main character was compared to the last book. Yes, she is another geeky girl type. But she seems mostly more mature, more outgoing and has a lot more slang and teenager-like thoughts. At first I found that hard to deal with. So many CAPS it was hard to
FOE.
CUSS.
Lots of the above went on as well. But I cast my mind back to my old letters and diaries and this is so typically young teenager speak.

The character is also obsessed with a TV show and so has many "cut scenes" with her heart-throb character from that show. These are amusing, once you get your head around the constant jumps out of reality into her head. Then there are the emails, instant messages etc scattered throughout the pages. I love books that do that. They are a great narrative device and they make the reading fun.

I really enjoyed this story. Its classic chick lit, and so satisfying to read. Heidi is so me at the same age. Most of her thoughts and her obsession with a fictional character was like looking into a weird mirror. A bit embarrassing to admit, but hey, at least now I feel a little more normal than I did before. I finished the book this morning around 1:30am. I couldn't put it down. The last 10 pages I was waiting for Day to make me cry, but the resolution was really spot on for me. So happy, I managed to get to sleep almost straight after I closed the book. I even forgave her for the last time, ha ha.

Product image for Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy TinkletrousersTra-la-laaa! Captain Underpants is back in an all-new epic adventure that's the zaniest, funniest, outrageousest, and time-travelingiest yet!

When we last saw our heroes, George and Harold, they were under arrest and headed for prison. Then Harold foolishly uttered the fateful words "What could be worse than going to jail for the rest of our lives?" and changed the course of human history.

In this ninth epic novel, Dav ... more...
