Review #22092 - Dated: 27th of June, 2021 Author: mizim |
Patchwork is a game that combines a bit of luck with some careful planning, all with the aim of creating the best, and most profitable, patchwork quilt possible. Set up requires having enough space to place all the patchwork tiles in a single circle, this can be hard depending on your table size, but as tiles get removed you can slowly spread them back out. Each player gets a board and a token, which goes on the game track. You then get buttons, which you will need to purchase one of the next three tiles. There's no dice here for movement, instead, each tile shows how much it costs and how many spaces you move. If you are in last place or sitting on top of the other player, then you get to go again. If you can't, or don't want to, buy a tile, then you can skip to the spot in front of the other player, which at least earns you more buttons.
I like the strategy involved here, you need to look carefully at which of your three options is going to fit best on your board (happily you can flip them and turn them to your hearts content) but also how far it will move you (there are some free, single square patches along the way) and also how many buttons are on the tile as the more buttons on your board, the more you earn. The game ends when you both reach the final space and then you score, with points for completing a 7x7 square (first player who completed it gets the bonus), how many buttons you have left and minus points for empty spaces. What's great about this game is that I've played it with a range of abilities who have all been able to at least find the best way to place their tiles. My only complaint with this game is that it is a two player only but other than that, I like that each game is going to play different.
