The Emoji Movie is a film that I thought had potential but I wasn't too interested in watching it, however I had three children who had seen the trailer and were very eager to see it, so off we went to the movie theaters and here we are a year and a half later and I have so far managed to avoid watching it a second time or even buying it on DVD (which really tells you how little I enjoyed it). The animation is good and the soundtrack suits the film well but beyond that I really struggled to find anything that I could enjoy and it just wasn't memorable at all for me. And whilst my kids did enjoy it when it came out, they have never asked if we could buy the DVD.

The plot had merit and could have been done well but in the end it felt really flat and ended up more like one giant advertisement for various apps instead of an actual film aimed at entertaining (two more recent films have managed to include popular apps without it feeling blatantly obvious or forced). When it came to the characters there was simply nothing there that had me caring about any of them, they had no depth to them and even though our main character, Gene, was having a hard time trying to fit in and being the odd one out, I just didn't care about him, he could have been left an outsider and I still wouldn't have felt sorry for him.

Most kids film have at least one redeeming feature, I can't find that app for this film.
