My 7 year old daughter is very much into toilet humour and has a very short attention span so I thought this book would be ideal for grabbing her interest and get her reading. She laughed when she saw the cover as it has a large comical fly next to a big pile of poo. Just by the title alone, you have a good idea what the book is about!

The story follows a fly who discovers that different animals produce different amounts of poo and the bigger the animal the bigger the poo's! The drawings are fabulous and extremely well done. The text is a good size and varies throughout with onomatopoeia's thrown in to make the book thoroughly entertaining. It also features lots of repetition and rhyming which is great for emerging readers. To say my daughter loved reading this was an understatement. She sat down with me and read it cover to cover and couldn't wait for her daddy to get home so she could show him the pictures of poo! It was also good to talk about fly's in general, where they have been and why we don't want them on food and ourselves!

My daughter took the book to school for 'Show and Tell' and read it too her whole class. As you can imagine, the kids absolutely loved it (not sure about the teacher!) and it was a big hit. You can't go wrong with this for a funny and entertaining book that will appeal to young boys and girls!

For a book of this type, you have to have a sense of humour. Miss Six thought it was extremely funny, and was delighted to find that she could read it to her little sister just like a big girl. You know the children are growing up when the older can read to the younger all by herself! Miss Three was delighted too as she loves stories, especially when they are as funny as this one.

I guess it all comes down to what makes children laugh, and bodily functions are one of the funniest topics of all. As we get older we tend to play down toilet humour as being inappropriate and downright unmentionable in polite society, but children have no such inhibitions. Everyone, whether human or animal, has to poo, so why not treat it with the amusement it deserves? It is true that some adults might avoid this book on principle but it is their loss. Any book that helps families to laugh together is another way to get kids reading and thinking about the world around them.

Miss Six, being older, was able to comment on the theme of the story. She liked the way that the fly loved eating, but was not greedy - he admitted it when there was too much for him to manage, and did not overeat. When he first met the mouse, he was actually buried under the elephant poo and the mouse had to help him out. Miss Six really liked the way the mouse came to the rescue. Then she laughed when the fly joined him for dinner; while the fly had the mouse poo, the mouse had his cheese. A very sociable occasion!

Both children loved the pictures which are bold and bright, and leave no doubt as to what each animal is doing. Miss Three's favourite was the elephant; she found the expression on his face hilarious, and she thought it was the funniest thing ever that he pooed right on top of the poor fly and nearly suffocated him!

Despite the ick factor, the girls both loved the sound effects and echoed the splats, the bzzzzzz, and the ta-r-a--a-a-ahs. Everyone knows that poos can be very noisy as well as smelly; this book acknowledges that but also makes it clear that flies have a place in the cycle of life. And it reinforces that there is nothing wrong with doing a poo, whatever sort of creature you happen to be. It means your body is working properly!
