Super Power Baby Project features striking photographic portraits of its 70 subjects, taken by award-winning photographer Rachel Callander. The personality of each child shines through, with text that explains the special qualities and life-changing powers each one brings. Rachel and Sam Callander have created this beautiful book not only as a record, but also as a means of changing the way we talk about children. They believe all children are born awesome - this book demonstrates it.

Author Biography

Rachel Callander is mum to Super Power Baby Evie Amore who passed away in 2010 at the age of 2 years. This gives her insight into the lives of Super Power Babies and their family's triumphs and challenges. This book is a long-term dream of Rachel's that has been years in the planning. Rachel holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Photography), is an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (ANZIPP) and in 2011 was awarded the title of New Zealand Wedding Photographer of the Year at the annual NZIPP Iris Awards.

The idea of the book is great, show how normal special needs children really are. The photos are phenomenal and the stories are inspirational and I guess for the families the book and the memories the price of the book is not an issue but personally I would never spend that kind of money on a book and the book doesn't really appeal as something that I would be interested in reading again. I do have a special needs child but she is a teenager so I know how this would appeal but can't see a lot of interest in a book like this.

The book is heavy , it would be nice if a follow-up project would be considered in a few years to show how far the children have progressed, I would not buy the book but I would have a look at it. The price is a huge factor when buying books, I know the photographer has to be compensated but that is just a bit too high. Yes the photos were high quality but I would not be happy paying that much for a few photos (it is not possible to know all the kids in the book). A big positive is that the conditions are explained for people to try and understand what the child has to deal with.

The concept is great but the book will have a very limited audience as in my experience most people don't want to know about special needs kids unless they have to deal with them, either due to being g the parent of such a child or working with them.

This book is a 100% New Zealand book, the creators of it live in New Zealand and all the families involved are living in New Zealand, and what is great is that they are all over the country so there is a great range or children here. This book gives us a glimpse into the personalities that make up the over seventy children that are in this book ranging from things such as Down Syndrome, Cri-du-chat, duplications of chromosones, deletions of chromosones, cleft lip and palate, undiagnosed and many many many more, a few that I had never heard of before, so it's a great educational book in some ways too.

There are a few pages throughout the book which are a double paged spread of one photo along with a quote, throughout the rest of the book each child has a two page spread, one has their super powers listed and some quotes from the parents and so on, each parents was interviewed before the photos were taken, and these photos are just stunning, there are some utterly gorgeous ones in this book and each one captures the child perfectly. The back of the book gives you a timeline leading up to the release of this book, a long list of all who donated to the making of this book, some photos of Rachael on her trip around New Zealand making this book and a list of resources for people such as support pages, pages devoted just to the special needs and so on.

This is a gorgeous book and I love how it promotes what these children CAN do and focuses on what makes them unique and special and I loved being a part of this project since my super power baby is in here too. :D
