Tucker   Review #13390 - Dated: 21st of January, 2015
  Author: Tucker

I've been here a few times since it first opened, and every visit has been pretty much the same - Warm welcome, time to flick through the menu, enquiry about food and drink orders, casual chat while pleasant but neutral music plays over the PA, food starts to arrive, meal ends and I pay up (usually less than $50 for a full-on meal and drinks for 2) and then I try to keep my dignity as I walk out feeling very full indeed.

Hang on, a meal for two for under $50?! Yes... that's an entree shared, a main meal each, and a drink or a dessert each. The secret: Thursday night. The Flames have a "Daily Deal" running pretty much every day, and Thursday night is the "buy one main, get one free" deal... so my usual meal is a Herb & Garlic Pizza Bread ($10) shared with my dining companion, a main meal each (maximum $30, since anything cheaper than that is the freebie), then a dessert (around $10 +/-) - tah dah! And that's how you have a great night out with your loved one without having to extend the mortgage.

On most occasions I tend to have the Scotch Fillet. Being a little cheeky, I get the Potato & Kumara Gratin swapped out for their lovely creamy mashed spud, and I often opt for a bowl of the stunning peppercorn sauce on the side - brilliant on the steak, and just perfect to finish off on the mash. Though I'm not a fan of mushrooms myself, I have been told the mushroom sauce is also pretty impressive with this dish too. For me, this meal is quite nice with a bottle of Heineken to wash it down.

The location is good - it's a little hard to spot from the road but that also means minimal - if any - traffic noise to interfere with your conversation. It also means the place doesn't tend to get hammered by the drunks as they stagger past heading for the more visible bars on Hood Street. The easiest way to locate this hidden treasure is to wander down Hood Street until you reach the alleyway that runs between Cullen's and the back of The Bank. Head down there and you can't miss spotting The Flames.

Overall, for me this is a great place to take mates, loved ones or extended family... especially on 2-for-1 Thursdays. ^;) One warning though: unless you have a hefty appetite, don't try to do a 3-course meal with the steak as your main. The portions are just too impressive, and you might find it uncomfortable to climb in behind the wheel of the car afterwards! ^:D
