A life time ago I worked for the Phonetician Spa Retreat over in the Gold Coast. While employed there it was considered the best spa in Australia. Among the facials, massages and Hydrotherapy Baths we had a Floatation Tank and as part of my job I had to use all of the products so I knew about them in order to sell them to potential customers. It was a hard job.......

Fast forward some 15 years later and New Plymouth now has one of these machines. Although completely updated and modernised from the dinosaur we had. This is fantastic.

You walk into a beautiful serene room where you see the big capsule, it looks like a giant egg or like the beds they use in Aliens. After the initial discussion you walk over to this huge machine and the lid is lifted and it looks absolutely amazing. A luxurious spa is awaiting you, although it is not a spa it's concentrated sea salts which allows you to float into a luxurious rest. This particular machine has different light options white, red, green and the most amazing blue you feel like you are looking at a pool in Greece.

Before entering the Floatation tank you need to remove all jewellery and have a shower. You are asked to wash with shampoo to begin with a gentle face wash - just to remove all toxins from your body so as not to contaminate the water. You also need to place ear plugs in before entering the water - as nothing worse than having water stuck in your ears. After your cleanse you walk back to the beautiful water and enter. Its up to you what lights you want, and if you would like music. The music however, only plays for a short time and eventually fades out so you are just left with your own breathing.

The feeling at first is a little weird. I tensed my legs and took a good ten minutes before I relaxed completely. As the music cut out I turned the light off and just lay in silence and the dark with nothing but my thoughts and breathing to keep me company. I eventually drifted off to sleep and only woke as my legs kicked out. As I sat up I turned the light on and thought it must be an hour and then the lights started flashing which is your cue to exit the capsule and go and have another shower. After exiting the shower all beautiful natural products are there for you to use including the most loveliest body lotion.

You walk out floating on to a deck to have the beating sun come down on you, wind charms gently tingling in the background and you realise how lucky you are to be alive. After walking on the deck you just feel so much lighter and happier and thirsty. It is recommend that you drink a lot of water after using this, as helps to remove all of the toxins from your body.

Using the floatation tank for an hour is the equivalent of getting 8 hours of deep sleep. It helps to relieve stress, anxiety and fatigue and helps reduce pain, from tired sore muscles. It is fantastic if you are pregnant as takes all that weight of your legs as you are literally just floating. It is a profound way of healing. This particular tank has enough space for you to spread your arms or put them above your head. It really is fantastic. It is also big enough for you to sit up if you want to. I would however, not recommend if you are claustrophobic. This is the sort of thing which would be ideal for a monthly treat there is nothing like it. The price is a little costly $80 for an hour but when you look at how much a massage cost it evens out.
