By the time our family got around to watching the Lego Movie, it had been out a while and I'd only heard great things about it, so the expectations were high. It was time for our movie night (at home on DVD) and the excitement of our 5 year old was high. I wasn't really sure what to expect... for fear of sounding a bit too sexist, I wasn't sure if it would be quite right for our daughter - would there be enough princesses and girly things in it? We didn't manage the whole movie in one sitting, but that's more reflective of our movie habits and the fact we got started a bit too late, but overall the Lego Movie was a hit with our 5 year old ... I know this as she often asked to watch it again... and I'd hear her quoting bits of it randomly from time to time (and still do a few months later). My husband and I enjoyed it too. I personally found it got better the more I watched it... there were parts aimed at us adults to give us a giggle and keep our interest, and I picked up bits I'd missed when I watched it for a second and third time. And I'd find myself humming, "everything is awesome" from time to time - maybe not so good! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, and I think this movie probably wouldn't suit everyone, especially thinking a lot of it would go right over the head of younger children, but our whole family really enjoyed it and I would definitely recommend it. |

I love lego, played with it as a kid and never in a million years thought it would be part of books or in fact a movie. We got offered an ultraviolet voucher to use for the lego movie and I thought yea okay, I wasnt all that keen but my 4 year old son was very keen and wanted to watch it. The site I got angry with but then again I'm not a big computer person. Now for the movie, we invited a friend over as her son really wanted to watch it as well, so popcorn and a movie on a Sunday afternoon sounded great just before school started back. Well my friend and I got bored and started chatting and the kids - there were 4 altogether 11, 6, 4 and 4 - all lost interest as well. Now giving the movie a fair chance we decided to try again without the extras. Nope it was correct the movie just wasnt for me, I meant lego is to be played with I didn't enjoy watching it on the tv, I do however give credit where credit is due and it was a very well put together movie, I mean looking it up and working out how they did it is amazing, frame by frame shots I would of hated to be that person that sneezes at the wrong time and mucks it all up to start again. I thought my son was enjoying it and then I watched him and nope he was playing with his cars with his back turned to the tv, he is 4. So this movie was a bust for our household. There was some very good jokes and funny parts I heard as I wasnt really paying attention as it lost my interest already, in the fairness again it was a very well put together movie. This movie just wasn't for our household. But after reading a lot of reviews it seems to be a movie for a lot of people. |

When I first saw the trailers for The Lego Movie come out, I must admit that I wasn't too concerned about watching it, once I read the junior novel though, I knew it would, at the least, be an entertaining movie for the family. Getting into the movie took a little bit of time as we had some issues connecting my mums laptop to the TV (as we used an Ultraviolet code) and some tears from my five year old when she thought it meant we weren't going to watch it at all, but we got there in the end. My six year old, five year old and three year old all happily cuddled up on a bean bag together to watch the movie and there was no restlessness until the last half hour (due more to the fact that they didn't want to fall asleep and miss out on it). Right from the start there were a few funny moments that had even us three adults laughing and getting into it. The CGI is really well done, I had a google and saw that it was done to appear like a stop-motion movie and they pulled that off really well, the only real stop-motion part was the end credits. And the amount of detail, making sure there would be scuff marks and fingerprints to make it appear like someone was manipulating the world is pretty neat. I also like that, with the exception of just a few things, you can already buy all the lego that was featured in the film. The voice acting was really fun, Morgan Freeman suited Vitruvius really well, and whilst none of the other voices stood out for me, or had me going "oh yes, that's whatshisname" that wasn't a bad thing as I was able to get into the movie and the flow of things all the easier. And fun little fact, Anthony Daniels even voiced C-3PO in The Lego Movie (he is the one and only C-3PO from all the way back at the start of Star Wars). I really enjoyed all the nods to the past of Lego and the storyline was fun and perfect for showing that there are times when it is good to follow along and follow the instructions but that there is also going to be a time when it is better to let the wind blow the instructions away. The kids really enjoyed this and I have set my tablet up so that I can play it on there when connected to wi-fi (not enough memory to download). I'm sure, without a doubt, that my three master builders will want to watch it again. |

My boys love Lego of just about any sort and Lego games are always popular so imagine their joy when I told them we were going to watch the Lego Movie. They loved it and have asked me to buy it on DVD or record it on Sky so that they can watch it again and again. I was wondering how on earth they would get it to look realistic. The story was easy to watch and I loved the twist at the end (I was sitting there going, well that does make a lot of sense) and I loved how the lessons were learnt. I think that all adults have a bit of a big kid inside them and part of us doesn't want to grow up because it means heaps of responsibility and kids love making things and letting their imaginations run wild so it was good to see how the movie put those thoughts into practice. The graphics were great, I really enjoyed watching the master builders and the speed they think of a concept and build it, something I'm not good at as I like to think about things from all angels and then make a decision and hope it is the right one. I enjoyed the movie and I noticed more than one person singing along and trying not to dance in the isles (lucky we watched it at a family friendly venue). This is going to be a DVD we have to own.. just hope my boys don't wear it out with repeated watchings. |

Having heard rave reviews about the Lego Movie I was very keen to watch it with the little Misses these school holidays. We received a Ultra Violet Voucher to use. This was easy to set up using Flixster. Whilst it was great to just be able to stream this through the computer it did mean that we couldn't watch it when not connected to the internet and it uses 1.6 GB meaning I couldn't use it off my phone data. The Little Misses as well are very competent using DVDs so their ability to watch The Lego Movie on the computer is limited to when I can set it up for them. Right well onto the actual movie. I was intrigued as to how a whole movie could be created just with the use of Lego and it really is amazing. My girls especially Miss Three found it moderately scary however all three were engaged for the duration of the Movie and Miss Six and Miss Seven really loved it. It also appeals to adults and was a movie that we could all watch as a family and enjoy together. It sends a good message to fathers who are overprotective of their Lego. That was a nice twist at the end as it took the film from being an animated based film back to reality and perhaps showing how imagination should take priority over rigid acceptance of order. The key song was very catchy and the girls have been singing it over and over. Watching this set us up for a massive Lego fest and all our Lego was out and the girls have had hours of free play creating their own Lego Movie. I just found the whole movie pretty amazing. It really does make you realise how amazing Lego is and how many different ways it can be used. Its like the ultimate super toy! If your kids (and you..) have some Lego and some imagination they/you will never be short of entertainment. I can definitely recommend this movie as a great movie for the whole family to watch. You may find like us that you watch it many more times than once! |

I had just taught a class in Claymation (stop frame animation using modelling clay/[playdough) when I sat down to watch The Lego Movie with my children (my 2 and 4 year olds and my 9 and 11 year old nephew and niece). I was very excited to see what the professionals would create using lego and stop frame animation. The kids, of course were very excited too - the three older kids had joined me for my class and lego is a huge part of their play at home. It was bound to be enjoyed by all of us. The movie gave the three older kids inspiration to use the Lego animation software on my iPad and create their own animations. If I had let them, they would have spend all day every day of the holidays creating animations. It is so nice to see a positive impact on children's creativity from watching a movie. Movies are so often passive experiences. This one has definitely boosted interaction, creativity and teamwork between the cousins. This was my first experience of watching a movie through an Ultraviolet voucher. I used Flixter as a portal to download and view the movie. I thought it was best to download (rather than stream) the movie as I figured it would probably be viewed many times over and I wanted to preserve my monthly broadband allocation. I downloaded it onto my iPad and then streamed it to my AppleTV so our whole family could enjoy it on the TV screen. I love the fact that we don't have to mess around with discs now as I have had so many scratched by children. There were strong messages throughout the movie of creativity and believing in oneself. Thinking differently to the rest of the group was also highlighted as a valuable attribute when problem solving. Throwing all ideas into the mix can mean that great solutions are introduced. Teamwork is portrayed as important too. The children enjoyed it when characters such as Batman, Superman, Star Wars etc popped up during the movie. The adults enjoyed the little bit of MC Hammer as it was part of our era. My son particularly liked it when one of the characters sang a little bit of "Danny Boy" - my son's name is Daniel and he loves that song. There are little things wound into the story to capture all sorts of interests and experiences. The song which is introduced near the beginning of the movie, "Everything is Awesome" has been sung a lot around our house since the kids heard it. I must say that it caught my ear a little as well. As soon as it started playing again during the movie, I felt myself having a little boogie. The end of the movie brought everything together as the humans were introduced for the first time. It helped highlight some of the messages that had been given during the movie. The fact that children have great imagination and adults often try to squash it and that heroes can be just ordinary characters. The reference to the "Kraggle" (aka superglue) became a little more obvious with the introduction of the humans - an adult trying to keep the world perfect rather than allowing creativity and at times, a little chaos. Although, as a parent, I saw so many positive messages in the movie, it didn't take away from the children seeing it as pure fun and entertainment. I think this is a sign of a great movie - wholesome messages quietly given to the viewers to combine with their existing ideas of themselves and others. As I type this, the children are watching the movie again and I think it will become a family favourite. It has earned every megabyte of storage space it takes up on the iPad. |

After having read the Lego Movie Junior Novel to my son, I was super excited to watch the Lego movie and see the book brought to life. If you have a lego fan then they are sure to love this movie - it's fast paced, action packed and hilarious, even when the story starts to get serious there is still plenty of comic relief to stop it from getting too dark and scary. The animation is really well done and the attention to detail is amazing. I also thought that the actors really suited the characters that they portrayed. I love the main character, Emmet. He is not you're typical super hero, in fact he's just you're regular, law abiding citizen which makes some of the situations that he finds himself in, all the more hilarious. I also love the inclusion of some well known lego figures - batman, superman, wonder woman and Benny the 1984 blue spaceman which I remember from my own childhood. I love the underlying theme of not always following the instructions and using your imagination to create something new and amazing and I thought that the ending (if you don't know it's coming) was really unexpected and very clever. Overall it's a great family movie and not just one for the kids. |

This movie actually did pretty well to stand up to the hype. I was unable to see the film in the cinema, and have only just watched it now, months after the references and glowing reviews have hit the internet. And yet I was still not disappointed by this film. The creativity of this film is astounding. The commentary reveals that every piece reconstructed in this movie is based on a real life lego equivalent (apart from some of the hairstyles). This means that if you did in fact have enough Lego blocks, you could reenact the entire film in your own home. The whole film is pretty much just a giant advertisement for Lego, but it is so beautifully done, that I don't even care. I know that it is a blatant marketing ploy, but I enjoyed this film enough that I didn't care. Listening to the commentary again, the cast question certain parts of the film, and another answers what sets that they originally came from. It is creativity at it's finest. But enough of that. The movie itself. The plot was quite well done, and I enjoyed the mix of fantasy world, and real-life. The idea of a Master Builder who can create his own instructions, and find multiple uses for a single part, was a stroke of genius. I will definitely be watching it again, and if I had money, I would certainly be buying some Lego to become a Master Builder again. I hate to follow in the footsteps of the reviewers before me, but yes, 10/10. |

Ever since The Lego Movie came out at the theatres my nieces have driven me nuts by singing 'everything is awesome' so I knew once it was released on dvd I would have to see it. Right from the start I was hooked - the animation was very well done and it was great watching Lego figures come to life. After all who doesn't love Lego? I loved how everything was made to look like it was made out of Lego including the water in the shower! Everything was so well thought out and the creators really paid attention to detail! The casting was spot on too with many popular actors lending their voices to the movie. I love the story behind it too showing that anyone can be a hero and you don't always have to stick to the instructions to create something wonderful. The movie was interesting and action packed enough to hold the attention of both me, my 3yr old niece and my 11yr old niece. It's not very often a movie appeals to so many different ages at once. We all found ourselves laughing at different points throughout the movie and some of the one liners are awesome! I also loved how Lego figures from different sets throughout the years appeared in the movie. Also a number of new Lego figures, I think the movie has secured the popularity of Lego for many years to come. |

My daughter and I went to see this the other day as part of her school holiday wish list. We were both really excited to go along. We had seen the trailer a couple of times and at the end of each viewing, we had turned to each other and said "yes, we are going to that!" So it was a done deal. Sitting down to this, I loved just about every moment of it. I marvelled at all of the things made of Lego. I loved how all the physics of the water and things seemed to have been painstakingly thought out. So much detail and thought was involved, which kids would miss. Like when they show the parts and the serial numbers for each part at a few points. It would have taken a fair bit of research to get to that level of detail. All of the worlds throughout the movie are awesome. The characters are great. Loved all the little cameos from Simpsons, Superheroes, NBA All Stars, and the like. There is a great deal of humour in this movie and it's a good level. Funny for kids, but also plenty of nods to the parents and Lego fans of all ages. The only thing that let it down, was the end of the story arc. I just felt like it wasn't particularly strong, or it was trying too hard. But it was a kid's film and I was on board with the lesson they were trying to give us. The main moral of the movie seemed to be about not living life as per the instructions. It was a good theme to have, and one that really spoke to my daughter. She is the sort that would open a Lego pack, show me the instruction book and say "we don't need this". She has never built anything the way it's displayed on the box. After the movie we went home and I had gotten her a small box of Lego from the movie. She was thrilled to build with me, but at one point she told me off for following the instructions. I was horrified as she had deliberately put them out of reach and I was just building it freestyle. Apparently not freestyle enough. In any case, we will certainly be buying this movie on DVD when it comes out. |

Are you the sort of person who follows instructions and once the lego is made you leave it there and no one is allowed to touch it?? Or a you the sort of person who uses your imagination builds something from scratch and then a couple of days later busts it to build something different? Lord Business does not want Lego Land to ever change - he wants it to remain the same. He has found a secret weapon that has the power to stick everything in place. However there are a band of Master Builders who will fight for the freedom to express themselves how they wish. This movie has it all Super Heroes, Normal Contractors, Heros and Villains. Although you do want the good guys to win you can also understand the other side of the story and you look at how you play with Lego. As a child you want to explore your imagination and you create all sorts of worlds, but then as an adult you want to conform to the rules and build the structure as you have been told. I see it in our house - my husband is like this, the block has to go here where as my children are wanting to have blocks go in various other spaces. The movie is very clever in its use of the Lego Blocks. Even when Emmet is in the shower, the water is the little blue circular blocks. They use blocks for everything which is impressive. At one point I was trying to work out if it was filmed brick by brick but you can tell in some instances that it definitely is CGI. The demolition crew is extremely funny cause you can see kids doing the exact same thing. My husband is a huge Green Lantern fan so I was just about in tears when in the movie Green Lantern has a man crush on Superman (aka Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill). While they are locked up in prison Green Lantern is so excited to be chained next to Superman and Superman is pleading for some Kryptonite. Love that this movie can bring out so many emotions in everyone. A lot of Hollywood movie stars lent their voices to the movie and all of the characters seem to suit them. Liam Neeson does a fantastic Good Cop/Bad Cop character. Then there are the different Lego Worlds: Bricksburg, Cloud Cuckoo, the Wild West, to name a few. Although, it would have been neat if the Friends or Princess Legos were included in the movie - hopefully in the sequel. It has definitely renewed the Lego passion in our house and we now have a couple more sets added to the growing kits. A must see for any Lego fans. Everything is Awesome... |

This movie is really well made it sticks to the 'lego theme' so well including while in shower it drops lego blocks on his head. Impressive. Lord Business wants everyone and everything to stay the same. He likes everyone to follow the instructions and basically live each day the same as the day before. But, there are a team of Master Builders who want there imagination to expand they want to build what they want, how they want and not follow any instructions. The race is on as Lord Business has found a weapon that could alter Lego Land forever and only Emmet can stop him as it has been foretold that: One day a talented lass or fellow, a Special One with face of yellow, will make the Piece of Resistance found from its hiding refuge underground. And with a noble army at the helm, this Master Builder will thwart the Kragle and save the realm, and be the greatest, most interesting, most important person of all times. All this is true because it rhymes...... The movie makes you reacess how you play with lego - are you a Master Creator or are you a Constructor. My husband realised that he is a tyrant when it comes to lego as he beleives everything has its place where as my daughter is wanting to be a Master Builder and explore her creative side. A great movie for all family members. It explores different Lego Genres and reminds you that Lego is meant to be played with. The story is really well done and you have to laugh at Green Lantern and Superman aka Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill (even more funnier for me cause my husband huge Green Lantern fan). Batman is classic and definitly loves himself. Love the little twist at the end - worth watching again. Everything is Awesome!!!! |
