Learn to read with Reading Eggs

We created Reading Eggs as a unique online world where children learn to read. It supports each child's learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow children to progress at their own rate.

Learning to read
Learning to read is an important skill for all children. And we wanted to make it an enjoyable experience for children as well. Children love working and playing on the computer and the Reading Eggs program is all about bringing out the best in each child.

Educationally sound
The program has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It completely supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your child's results at school.

Children love it!
With interactive animations, fun games, great songs and lots of rewards, Reading Eggs is a great place to learn to read. Children are highly motivated to return again and again. At Reading Eggs, learning to read is enjoyable as well as very rewarding. Every lesson ends with a new book and a new critter to add to your growing collection.

Reading Eggs is now available on your iPad!
Your child can now use Reading Eggs on iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and mini with a minimum Operating System of 6.0. For more information please click here.

And it's growing!
Reading Eggs now has 120 big lessons. These 120 lessons are perfect for 4 to 7 year olds who are learning to read.

We are building more NEW lessons for our older Eggsplorers as part of Reading Eggs World. This world is perfect for 6-8 year olds who already know the basics of reading but who still have much to learn about reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. This exciting new world has lots of new lessons, new games and soon, many wonderful new books to read in Storylands. The learning focuses on building reading fluency and comprehension, spelling and vocabulary, and a range of writing skills including grammar and punctuation.

In the Reading Eggs World, children have their own house to decorate, a big new shop and an avatar that can walk and travel to many new destinations on Reggie's bus. Children are able to choose their own adventure from a wide range of activities and places to go.

This new world of interactive reading and writing activities will help to set kids up with positive attitudes about reading and learning for life. That's a tall order, we know, but we are passionately committed to delivering this to hatching readers everywhere. Please join us on this magical journey of eggsploration.

I signed my daughter up to this for the free trial before she turned five after reading that her school actually uses this program for learning and homework. I have a look around it before handing it over to my 4 year old and it seemed great it looked like fun and something she could do. I quickly showed my 4 and 3 year old how to work it and then left my daughter (4) to it.

My 4 year old took the reins and off she went getting around the map and doing all the questions she was meant to, she had so much fun she just kept going and going with the game. We let my 3 year old son do it and off he went, not thinking he would click to it but did just as well, worked out what to do and listened to it well.

I love this program and my daughter is now 5 and started school beginning of term three and got signed up through the school for this program to do 3 times a week or more if they can with their homework. She is learning lots and my son is watching her, he can't wait to start school to do it too. Its great for listening skills and they really got to listen and understand what the program is actually wanting them to do.

I recently signed my daughter up for Reading Eggs when they had a special allowing us to trial the product for five weeks for free. I set my daughter up with the map and sat next to her as she learnt how to navigate the games, and maps. She is 6 years old, and while her reading skills are not reliable, her computing skills are quite brilliant. She easily took control and within two lessons was doing really well.

Her interest in the beginning was very high. She would happily sit for up to 4 hours doing lessons. The lessons are all games where you read on the screen and spell the words or select the right word. Each lesson builds on what you have learnt. So you might have learnt "I" and then you might learn "am" and then you will do words that rhyme with "am". Then you are putting the words you learn together, to make them longer or to build sentences.

We definitely noticed that her reading, and particularly her choosing to read and write outside of the game increased. It wasn't by much, but it did have an effect on her enthusiasm which was worthwhile to us. Part of the program means that your child earns awards, and points which they can use towards buying turns at games at the arcade too. Unfortunately, after about 4 weeks her interest in the games waned. If she had still shown an interest after 5 weeks, I would have purchased a year subscription. Apart from the Reading Eggs, you can also access Maths Seeds which helps your child build numeracy as well as their literacy skills via the Eggs.

Ultimately, I think if your child is keen to learn to read and has the patience and computer skills for this type of programme, it is worth while. I would suggest to anyone looking into it, to trial it first to make sure it is the sort of thing your child can commit to. This would be brilliant for over summer when your child is out of the classroom, to ensure they are still practicing their reading skills.
