I had never really had much Mexican until I moved in with my husband he is a huge Mexican food fan so I quickly learnt how to cook some of his favourite dishes. I haven't tried any of the Mrs Rogers range so I was keen to give the Mexican seasoning ago because up until now I have been doing a bit of cheating and buying premixed packets of flavouring.

The first thing I noticed when opening the packet was the recipe I was quite excited I might have something new to try until I discovered it wasn't a recipe for the spice packet it was in. Opening the bag the smell hit me it reminded me of some of my favourite dishes and that was before I started cooking with it! Reading the ingredients list it has the mix you would expect to find in any Mexican recipe.

As tacos are one of our favourites I decided what better way to try it than with that. I simply browned some mince and onions, threw in some tomatoes and added some flavouring. I started by adding just a little at a time until I got the taste just right. The seasoning mix was perfect and made for much nicer tacos than we usually get. I'm now keen to try the others in the Mrs Rogers range.

I love Mexican food! ALways have... and I must agree with world-famous comedian Billy Connolly when he once joked on stage that the greatest thing about Mexican food is that it's all about how you fold it... fold the tortilla in half and you call in a Taco, stick two tortillas together and you have a Quesadilla, roll it for an Enchilada, and tuck in the ends for a Burrito. It's that simple versatility that drew me to learn to make it in the first place, and has kept it as one of my top-three cultural dish sets to this day. So yeah, I would have to say I know a little bit about what is Mexican seasoning and what's just a bad mix of salt and chilli flakes.

This is NOT just a bad mix of salt and chilli flakes. This is a well thought-out, well-balanced mix of authentic Mexican herbs and spices that is now my new #1 top pick for "how to make awesome Mexican in under 20 minutes". A while ago, I was asked to teach a teenager some quick and easy food he could make himself that would be full of flavour, but not require a lot of time, or money. He's looking at heading off to Uni and is considering a campus away from home, so wanted to know what his dietary options were - was he stuck with 2min noodles, or could he do something better for a fair price?

I asked him to select some basic ingredients that were affordable to buy in bulk, and we'd work out a recipe, what we came up with was this: a packet of unflavoured Uncle Ben's 2min Microwave Rice - nuked, obviously - some finely chopped ham, half a can of baked beans (cheaper the better, as long as the sauce isn't watery), and a tablespoon of the seasoning. Mix well, serves 2-4. Optional: Fry some onions, chillies and/or garlic in some butter or margerine - not oil - and stir through last, just before serving. You can see the end result in the photo above - we were both pretty impressed at the results - it tasted amazing! The only difference I would try next time would be to make an infusion of the seasoning, and then cook the rice in that so the rice picks up more of the flavours.

Overall, a truly excellent seasoning mix for anyone who appreciates some spice and depth of flavour to their dishes, and knows the difference between a Churro and a Burro... because if you don't know that, I wouldn't want to see your dinner parties. Wink Icon

Usually when dealing with mexican food I add Flavoured tomatoes and salsa beans but because I wanted to focus completely on Mrs Rogers Mexican Seasoning I opted for only onions with the mince so could really get a true taste.

The girls where excited when I told them we where having nachos, but because I didn't want the corn chips to be the main focus I made a giant Bread Basket. I cooked the same way I normally would heated butter with the onions then added the mince, just before the mince was cooked through I added a good sprinkling of the seasoning. My first thought was wow this smells just like a Kebabs shop Donar Kebab - it was so yummy.

The girls tucked in like normal and loved it. I just kept thinking wow this is a 'Donar Kebab' it was delicious. I had just the right amount of seasoning and it tasted and smelt perfect. My husband also quickly demolished his and asked for seconds. definitely will be on the spice rack from now on. It is fantastic value and for the packet/box we could probably get four or five nacho meals out of it which I am more than happy with. You could use in so many dishes and depending on how much you actually use definity a great buy.

We love Mexican food and regularly buy sachet of taco or burrito seasoning. The cost of these soon adds up. I really like the idea of a resealable packet so that I could use as much or as little as I want and save the rest for another day. Mrs Rogers Eco-Pack of Mexican Seasoning did just that. It is a cardboard box with a resealable plastic bag inside and a little newsletter from Mrs Rogers.

I showed a friend that I had the Mexican Seasoning to review and she suggested I use it with breadcrumbs to coat chicken. I loved her idea and chose to serve the chicken in burritos. I read the box and the newsletter but I still had no idea how much seasoning to use. I didn't want to make it so hot the kids wouldn't eat their meal. I chose to be cautious and only put a tablespoon into the plastic bag with the breadcrumbs. The result was although it changed the colour of the breadcrumbs slightly we couldn't taste the seasoning on our chicken. The meal was a success so I repeated it a few days later with twice as much seasoning and we had a lovely mild Mexican flavour. My husband and I would have been happy to have even more flavour.

This is a product we will be buying again when the box is empty since it is more practical and economical than buying sachets all the time. I would have preferred the recipe on the newsletter used the Mexican Seasoning as this would have given me a better idea of how much to use for my meal but the seasoning is great.

I was lucky enough to be given some of this Mexican seasoning to review and as I'd planned nacho's for dinner (a favourite for my 6 year old) I decided to go for a different method from usual, using this seasoning instead... especially after reading on the packet that it's recommended for nachos..

Normally I'd use chilli beans and Mexican flavoured tomatoes (plus mince, onions, carrots or courgettes etc.) for a quick and easy mince mixture without having to worry about flavourings. So to change it up this time I used plain canned tomatoes (and some straight off the vine) plus baked beans instead of chilli beans and used this spice mix for flavour instead. I found with my fairly big batch of mince mixture that I needed almost the whole packet of spice - I used 3 tablespoons, but could have used more. It was hard to know what to use in terms of quantities and as this spice is new, it isn't listed on Mrs Rogers Website yet - I hope in time they put some recipe suggestions up. The great little tips and recipe sheet in the packet didn't actually use this particular spice.

However I was very impressed with the resulting flavour of the nachos, noting in particular that they were very mild in terms of spice as this suits my conservative family! I could easily add more heat by going back to using chilli beans too - plenty of versatility.

With the small amount of spice left in the packet, I added flavour to a quick fried rice I made up from leftovers - really really good! I'm planning on buying more spice just for this! I'm also keen to try it as a flavour on chicken - I can imagine it would be nice in wraps with salad for dinner next week. But I'll need a bit more spice, so it can wait until I've been shopping. However at a little over $2 for the packet, it's well worth having a few in the cupboard. I can highly recommend for anyone who wants flavour combinations worked out for them so they can make top notch meals without the stress.

My family generally eats a Mexican style meal once a week, so I was confident that we would get good use out of this Mexican spice by Mrs Rogers'. I bought some nacho chips, sour cream and mince for this recent meal.

As I was prepping for dinner, grating the cheese up and chopping up tomatoes my toddler came into the kitchen asking for a snack. I said no and she took the spice box into the lounge. I found her having easily opened the box herself, struggling to get into the bag. Good I thought, that is excellent - imagine if she had been able to break it all open. The spice would have been in my carpet instead of dinner!

She was very insistent though, that she be allowed "some". So I opened the bag, and gave her a little pinch. She ate it all up and said yum. Then she took the bag off me and asked for "more lunch". So she had another couple of pinches of it. Then I had to just say no, because she was going to try and eat the lot. Now she is the sort of kid who eats sour, bitter things all the time anyway, but I was concerned that the spice level would be super low because of how easily she ate it.

I made the mince up with about two tablespoons worth of the spice, and I could probably get another dinner out of this packet which is great. It makes it really economical. I try to keep the spice level down anyway because we are feeding kids too. The taste of the nachos was really good. I was very happy, there was a good level of heat for us and I could taste a hint of citrus and other flavours in there. It made for a more complex taste for the meal and the kids monstered their meals so it was a hit here. I would definitely purchase this one again as it's a better taste to the one we normally get. Thanks so much to giving us the chance to try this KIWIreviews and Mrs Rogers'!
